In the same way of World Cup of 1958 and according to the italian model, the competition saw 4 rounds, but with a crucial difference. For the first and only time in the World cup semi-final’s history, if a case of draw occurred, teams did not recur to the play-off step but to the “scores quotient”, that is the difference between the goals realized and those taken. The match of Santiago: Chile – Italy The italian team, after the negative experience of the previous competition in Sweden, was able to qualified, with the two great victories with Israel for 4-2 and 6-0. Italy had a good team, with great players such as Gianni Rivera, the first italian to win The Golden ball in 1969. Called Golden Boy, Rivera was considered the greatest italian player of the century. His play was based on an innovative strategy with many attacks’ solutions. His elegance in the movements and his body not so muscular were criticized. The “strong” play’s supporters accused him of much elegance and few tattic. In spite of this criticism. Rivera, together with Sivori and Alfatini, made the strongest attack’s trident. After the draw with Germany for 0-0, Italy had to play against Chile. For some unpleasant articles signed by italian journalists, the atmosphere of the match was not relaxed. Chile was indignant for some players originally of south America that played in the italian team. They were considered as traitors. Chilean supporters and fans refused the flowers that the italian team gave them before the match, and the match became a kind of battle, with a nervous atmosphere. For the not objective refereeing of the english Aston, the match ended with the victory of Chile, for 2-0. Ferrini and David were sent off to react to Lionel Sanchez’s punches, while Maschio suffered a nose’s fracture. The match had not great action and it is remembered as “The battle of Santiago”. Altough Italy won against Switzerland for 3-0, (2 goals scored by Bulgarelli and 1 by Mora), Italy was eliminated from the copetition. The chilean team, with a strong play and a favourable refereeing, defeated Urss, but was stopped by the great Brazil in the following match. Brazil without Pelè but with Garrincha From the second match, the winner of the previous edition was obliged to play without Pelè, who suffered a bad muscle strain. The real protagonist of the championship was Garrincha. With his play, dribbling and uncontrollable springs, gave a beautiful touch to the matches, otherwise characterized by am harsh and violent action. Garrincha, in the semi-final. Was victim of the incorrect action of a Chilean player. He was sent off for reaction to a bad foul and while he was going to the changing room, he was hit by a stone thrown from the stand. This action meant three stitch. But Brazil was able to win for 4-2 against Chile and passed to the final step, against Czechoslovakia. The Czech team, with powerful players and leaded by the goalkeeper Schroif, had baeted Hungary for 1-0 and in the semi-final it won against Yugoslavia with three important goals. Although Garricha was sent off in the semi-final, he was not disqualified, while Pelè was replaced by Amarildo, who keep on playing in the italian clubs. Brazil dominated the match thank to his players Garrincha, Amarildo and Vavà. At the ’15, the Czech team got the advantage with Masopoust.
